SwimSafer advanced lifesaving skills course teaches rescue techniques and emergency response skills for safer swimming environments.
This module builds confident, capable responders through progressive, scenario-based training. Learners refine risk assessment, safe entries, approach strategies, and controlled tows while maintaining personal safety as the first priority. The curriculum also sharpens survival swimming, effective use of flotation aids, and clear communication with bystanders. It suits competent swimmers seeking to elevate their skills for supervised aquatic environments.
Participants tackle realistic in-water scenarios that develop reaching and throwing assists, non-contact rescues, and effective towing over distance. You will practice break-away techniques, support of a tired swimmer, and coordinated teamwork during extractions. Sessions emphasize calm leadership, concise commands, and efficient handover to facility staff once the scene is stable. Debriefs after each drill reinforce decision-making under time pressure.
Entry expectations include strong swimming fitness and prior foundational water safety training. Assessment combines timed swims, clothed tasks, object retrievals, and a structured rescue plan presentation alongside a short theory component. Successful candidates receive a SwimSafer Advanced Lifesaving Skills endorsement recognized by partnering venues and programs. Enrollment is limited to maintain high coach-to-learner ratios; bring suitable swimwear, a lightweight top for clothed drills, and a positive attitude.
It builds real-world rescue competence: safe water entries, defensive approaches, contact and non-contact rescues, towing with/without aids, reaching/throwing assists, survival strokes and clothed swimming, signaling and risk assessment, plus basic CPR/AED awareness.
It’s recommended for confident swimmers who have completed SwimSafer Stage 5/6 (or equivalent) and can swim multiple lengths and tread water unassisted. Participants should be water-confident and able to follow safety instructions; exact prerequisites may vary by provider.
Duration varies by provider; many run over several sessions totaling 6–12 hours. Assessment typically combines continuous coach observation with scenario-based rescues and a survival swim; some include a short theory quiz.
